Dr Jan Coles, President and AFMW Representative Dr Desiree Yap, Immediate Past President VMWS/ AFMW Representative
Dr Raie Goodwach – VMWS Vice President Dr Mariolyn Raj, VMWS Secretary Mariolyn is an accredited general surgical registrar with a special interest in breast & endocrine surgery who graduated with honours from Monash University. Shortly afterwards, she traveled to London to pursue her interests in surgery working under the tutelage of Mr. A. Young at St Thomas’ & Guy’s Hospitals. She has recently returned to Melbourne after training in Sydney during the past year. She is a past treasurer of the medical undergraduates’ society, a mentor to UNSW masters students and is a fellow of the Centre for Independent Studies. Mariolyn is actively involved in medical education and since 2005 has been a medical organizer for children’s disability “Star” camp. Mariolyn believes that women in medicine have a responsibility to be health advocates for women in the community. Through her ongoing involvement with the Australian Cancer Council & Peter McCallum Cancer Institute she is involved in promoting awareness in these areas. She is a firm believer that the work of VMWS will make a positive contribution to this cause. Dr Desiree Yap - Immediate Past President VMWS, AFMW Representative Desiree is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine who has appointments at Monash Medical Centre and The Royal Women’s Hospital but who is currently working part-time in her East Melbourne Private Practice whilst trying to mother her two young children. Before becoming so domestic, Desiree traveled widely, working both in rural and remote Australia as well as overseas including with WHO. Desiree believes VMWS springs from a fine tradition, and that as one who has reaped the benefits of those who went before, in addition to having strong feelings about social justice, feels a responsibility towards maintaining the organisation. Associate Professor Deborah Colville – AFMW National Co-ordinator Deb is a Melbourne ophthalmologist who graduated from Monash in 1975 and is a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists and the College of Surgeons (1983). She has a small private practice in Ivanhoe, NSW. Deb was a Director of Ophthalmology at Austin Repatriation Medical Centre and recently retired from the College of Surgeons Council and as Chair of the RACS Women in Surgery Committee, a position she held for nine years. Since 2000, she has been Director of Curriculum Development at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Deb’s Master of Public Health degree focused on educational program evaluation in health care and she now researches curriculum and public health themes, including ophthalmic public health, gender and curriculum, and women in leadership in vocational education and training. She is interested in ‘doing leadership differently’, developing ways of participation that ‘work for women’ in the profession. “ Arising from the MWIA meeting in Sydney 2001, Deb taught medical students in Sweden and participated in curriculum development for MWIA with its Executive, alongside gender experts from the WHO and UN, in Italy. Dr Laura Edwards – VMWS Social Secretary Laura completed her MBBS (Hons) at the University of Tasmania in 2006 where she was co-founder of IMPACT, a student organization working on projects to assist and raise funds for developing countries. Her degree was interspersed with work as a bushwalking guide and elective trips to South and Central America. She moved to Melbourne in 2007 to work as an Intern at Western Health. She is now working as an RMO in Obstetrics and Gynaecology while finishing her final semester of a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine part time. Laura joined the VMWS in 2006 becoming Social Secretary in 2007. While not working and studying she enjoys practicing conversational Spanish with friends, participating in triathlons and bushwalking trips back to Tasmania. Dr Marissa Daniels - VMWS Social Secretary Dr Kate Duncan - VMWS General Committee Kate is an Obstetrician in private practice in the south-east suburbs. Interest in VMWS goes back to early days as an intern, RMO and Registrar at the Queen Vic (where we had such wonderful mentors and role models). Kate has been a Committee member of both the VMWS and the AFMW. As an AMA Board member Kate is working at the State level on several issues including efforts to resolve the Medical indemnity crisis and the Provider number issue. Dr Natalie Marijanovic - VMWS AMA Representative Dr Ivy Tan - VMWS General Committee Ivy has been a member of the VMWS for a few years and is delighted to become a committee member. Ivy aspires to a career in surgery with a particular interest in hands. Over the years she has been involved in many volunteer and charity organizations including Interchange, St Johns Ambulance and the Oaktree foundation. Ivy’s interests include traveling, fine arts, golf and rock climbing. Dr Rekha Ganeshalingam - VMWS General Committee Dr Mikhaila Lazanyi - VMWS General Committee After completing MBBS (Hons) at Monash University in 2008, Mikhaila is currently enjoying her internship at Barwon Health. She has many outside interests including gymnastics, rock climbing, circus arts and most recently surfing. Additionally, her extensive involvement in Rural, Indigenous and Developing World health has taken her to all parts of the globe and most recently led to her involvement with the Global Health Conference. She hopes to undertake a Master of Public Health in the near future. After joining VMWS last year and attending the MWIA Western Pacific Regional Congress as part of a Leadership scholarship, this year Mikhaila is assisting Jill in her role as Treasurer and hopes to become a more active member of VMWS. Dr Jenny Huang - VMWS Newsletter Editor Jenny is from sunny Brisbane. She is now able to endure the Melbourne cold after spending 1.5 years in Ballarat, an inspired undertaking influenced through her involvement with Outlook (Rural/Indigenous Students’ Health Club). In her spare time, she pretends to be a kid again by being a recreational leader for Kidney and Diabetes children’s camp. She has a love for choral singing and travel, and occasionally can be caught throwing herself off a bridge or a plane in some foreign destination. Jenny is excited about being part of this great organisation as she believes that the time has come (for part of her) to grow up and take on her responsibility of being a true global citizen. Dr Shueh Hwuei Lim - VMWS Newsletter Editor Shueh Hwuei is from Penang, Malaysia and currently working at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She has been actively involved at the university with the Student Ambassador leadership program, Victorian Student Aid Program and Outlook (Rural/Indigenous Students’ Health Club) in the last few years. She enjoys swimming, watching Korean dramas/movies (and eating Korean food!), travelling and helping out with St John Ambulance duties during her free time. Miss Linny Kimly Phuong - VMWS Medical Student Representative (Melb) Linny is a final year postgraduate medical student at Melbourne Uni. She has many outside interests including classical and contemporary ballet lessons, involvement with the Victorian Medical Womens’ Society (VMWS), University of Melbourne Medical Students’ Society (UMMSS) and the Red Cross. Having studied Pharmacy in her former life- she also continues to teach at the Monash University- Victorian College of Pharmacy and work on weekends in community pharmacy. As an active member of the VMWS, she enjoys the social aspects of being part of the society as well as the many opportunities it brings. Last year, she attended the MWIA Western Pacific Regional Congress as part of a Leadership scholarship, attended website skills training and a VMWS Self-Defence day workshop. Miss Claire Steiner - VMWS Medical Student Representative (Melb) Miss Annie Kilpatrick - VMWS Medical Student Representative (Monash) Annie is a fourth year medical student from Colac, a country town in Victoria. She has attended VMWS events over the last few years and really enjoyed them. This year she decided it was about time to become a part of the committee and play an active role in this fantastic society. Over the last three years she has been actively involved in Monash University’s rural health club WILDFIRE and enjoyed passing on her love for rural practice to fellow students. Annie has particular interests in obstetrics and also cardiology. In her spare time she enjoys reading (non med text books), going to movies and musicals, keeping fit, traveling and spending time with family and friends! |




Dr Jan Coles - VMWS President, AFMW Representative
After graduating from University High School at age sixteen, Jill went on to gain first class honours in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Melbourne in 2001. In 2002 she completed the Melbourne Marathon and 2003 she gained a Diploma of Surgical Anatomy from Melbourne University Private. Jill is a RACS trainee in plastic and reconstructive surgery; her professional memberships include the Australian Medical Association and the Association of Women Surgeons. Jill is the developer and manager of Bridging Leadership Barriers, a 2008-09 project funded by the Australian Government Office for Women that aims to build IT skills and leadership capacity within the Australian Federation of Medical Women. She is a certified Deep Diver (SCUBA) and when she is not working she also enjoys running, tending to her bonsai, furthering her IT knowledge, writing and looking after her flock of birds.
